Updating firmware

Hi TP

I picked up my D800E today and was looking at updating the B firmware from 1.00 to 1.01 using the steps given by Nikon...

The thing is I don't have a card reader :bonk: Can I tether the camera to the PC and do it that way? You can probably tell I've not done this before.

I don't think you can, I've only ever done it the CF card route and never found any info on doing it another way ... could be wrong though.

Doesn't the CF card look just like a removeable hard drive when the USB is connected.....basing my comment on how it appears with a Canon body.

No, the update is loaded onto the card and then installed in the camera from the card via a menu.

Can't the camera be used as a card reader when it's hooked via the USB cable (using Windows Explorer)? Once the file is written to the card then use the menu system to load the firmware from the card as per normal.

Yes, it can. The card in the camera becomes equivalent to a USB memory stick or hard disk, and you can copy files to it in the same way as you can with a card reader.

not on any of my nikons they dont with firmware it just wont do it you need a card reader.

Couple of things spring to mind. As you don't have a card reader you must be downloading everything via your camera, therefore your camera is working harder than necessary. For the cost of a card reader against the cost of an expensive camera I would suggest for a few pound you should invest in a card reader on fleabay for £2/3 for a usb2 reader, and a few £s more for a USB3 card reader.

If you're updating firmware you really don't want anything to go wrong. Get a cheap card reader off of fleabay and do it properly.

Card readers are cheap, however you might find there's one on your printer already.
I was surprised to discover slots hiding behind a door some time after setting it up, it could also read most types of card even including sony memory stick(?) from a visiting friends camera.
