Upgrade Lens HELP please

Im finding myself looking for an upgrade from my kit lens 18-55.

I have a nikon D40 and D70s and i am looking for better glass and sharpness of the same specifications.

Ive been looking at

Is there really much different between the two,apart from the f.

Any advice appreciated.

Or any other lens you can recommend... ?

Sorry for my bad writing style. It should read

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or Nikon 17-55mm are better than sigma
