Upgrade on equipment? 5D mk2

Hi all,

For the past year or so I have been using an entry level slr (Nikon D5000) and I've been thinking more about an upgrade for a while now. I'm off to Morocco on a 3 week trip in Feb and was considering splashing out on the 5D mk2 with the 24mm-105mm lens. I think I would get much more out of it in terms of full frame, wider shots and macro.

Do people think it's worth it making the jump? Any suggestions would be great.

Hi Chris,

Absolutely perfect set up in my opinion. Would be interesting how you find the transition from Nikon to Canon and getting to grips with the different menu's.

Cheers for the reply, I use a canon 650d at work, so may take a bit of adjusting. Just out of curiosity whats the respective model in the Nikon category? Is this worth a look.

People just keep pushing me towards the 5d!!

The comparable model is the D700, which has a better AF system (by a mile) and better weather sealing, but less mega pixels and is slightly smaller (still a lot bigger than your D5000 though). I use to own a canon 5D mk ii and enjoyed using it, but the AF limits what you can actually shoot though, which is infuriating at times (anything fast moving or even slow moving things when you use fast glass).

My D3 uses the same sensor as the D700 and I love it. Really nice piece of kit. If you have your heart set on canon though, you'd notice a big difference in quality of your shots over what you have with the 5D mk ii.

I must admit, the improved AF system on the mk3 has been the main reason for me looking to move away from the mk2.

Still a very nice camera though!

I started shooting wildlife more and more so was forced to move sadly. For "general shots", studio work and most stock shots, a 5D mk ii is great.
