upgrade telephoto lens for A700 ?

Currently I have got a sigma 70-300 APO. It has served me well for several years but now I think its time to invest in something better. The sigma has produced some good results but now that I am becoming more critical of the photo's I take and spending more time with them in PSE I can see that a lot of the images are quite soft when the lens is wide open and/or at max focal range.

What would be the best options I should be considering for an upgrade ? The telephoto will be mainly nature use i.e birds / animals out in the wild, but would be a bonus if it could handle a bit of sports too (football).

Budget is probably at best around the 600-700 range

I managed to pick up a Minolta 200f2.8 (non-HS) for something like £550.

This works remarkably well on my a700 with a x2 TC to give a super-lightweight 400f5.6 for wildlife.

Take off the TC and you have an excellent 200f2.8 for more general sports shooting.

I think I was lucky to find mine but they are around either FS here on TP or Dyxum.

Could do A LOT worse.
