Upgrading from a580... What to get?

I bought my a580 last year, and I've loved it. The best and also only 'D'slr I've owned. So this year I'm looking to switch to Nikon or canon,
as I'm not sure what Sony is going to do.
I'm not interested in their slt range but I do like the nex 7, but again I don't really know what they're going to do with it full frame alpha nex 9? If so then I'm interested

At present I'm looking at the canon eos 7d
5d mk 2... 3 is way out of budget as is the Nikon d800 which I do like and the other canon I liked was the 60da

I have no fixed interest I like to try all types of photography from Timelapse of moving clouds to stars, portraits landscape birds flowers bees and bugs etc etc at present it's only a hoby and mostly learning. But I want to some how push to earn bread and work on the butter at some point also hence I'm looking for a camera with a better selection of lens do that every other year I can just sell the body and move up a step ie maybe next year I'll get the 5d mk 3 or 7d mk 2 if it ever comes out.

What lenses do you want that you can't get with the sony?

The sensor in the a580 is the best crop sensor out there, low noise. Decent resolution. The sensor in the 7d is ancient in comparison.

I'm not sure about the SLTs either. I have this sneaking feeling the new sony FF might be entirely mirrorless. It seems a natural progression to follow from the mirrorless NEX. Mirrorless with in body stabilisation seems a very good way to go.
 
Just to echo some of the sentiment above from Suz.

For info. I've had Canon 40D, 60D (still have), 7D, 1dIII, 1DsII, 1DsIII, 5D and 5DII bodies in the last couple of years and now use Sony a700 and a77 and am very happy with the Sony OVF and EVF bodies. I have owned every Canon L lens from 24LII up to 600f4ISL apart from the 24-105f4L and to be honest I find nothing lacking in the Sony lens line-up; I do not need tilt-shift ! Some of the Sony lenses I have now I tested against Canon equivalents, kept the Sony gear and sold the Caonon. Someone somewhere might argue with me but I doubt you will get better than the Zeiss 16-35f2.8, 24-70f2.8 and 85f1.4 in any other mount and the Sony 50f1.4 and 70-400 are great, easilly as good as Canon equivalents, plus some of the Minolta lenses are legendary.

To help with the original question though, my advive is to go for a used 5DII, IMHO, it gives the best IQ/price ratio of any camera I have ever owned. Way better than the 7D, IMHO. Drop a couple of nice primes on it (100L is a bargain for starters and would do lots of what you shoot) and you will have a great set-up.

Well it's not that I think I can't get the lenes for Sony I know I can it's just that I dont want to get them if Sony continues their alpha mount only on their slt range
What should I check for if I get the 5 d mk ii Second hand ? Only thing with the 7d I liked was the 8fps as I use the 7fps on the a580 alot. Also do you know if they have they live view focus check or similar?

Their live view implementations are MUCH slower than the sonys. I got used to fast liveview ever since I started with my a500 and it feels so weird when I grab a friend's canon or nikon and the liveview takes ages to take a photo.

If you use live view a lot (I do as i shoot a lot from the hip for my street photos) consider whether you should really leave sony ;)
 
The new sony lenses work on all sonys not just the SLTs as far as I know. The only issue with SLTs is older sigmas don't like them. Has someone told you that the modern lenses won't work on all the alpha mount cameras?
 
What is it about the SLT that you dislike?
What is it that you want to gain by switching camera?
What level of investment do you have in Sony (or compatible) lenses?

You mention you like the fps on the 7D, for example, yet fps is one of the strengths of the SLT - with no mirror mechanism they can shoot much higher burst rates than similarly priced DLSR.

Remember that SLT are also (relatively) new technology - think of the A77 and what it offers, then consider how this will continue to develop over the next few years.

Unless you have a good reason to change now, why not stick with Sony for another year (The A580 is still a good camera, after all) and see what develops, rather than assuming you won't like it - you can always switch then if the SLT range continues to lack the things you want.

Also if you have money to spent there are some brilliant lenses in the Sony lineup to satisfy your GAS ;)
