USB hub slows everything down

I recently bought a powered USB hub for use with my iMac to manage my external drives, Time Machine and card reader etc but everything takes an age particularly downloading images from the card reader. Is this normal and if not can anyone recommend a hub that won't make everything work at a snails pace?

Is it a USB 1 or 2 hub? Also is it powered?

Sounds like a bandwidth problem vua the USB hub. You can only process so much data in total so if you have several links via the hub, such as card download and then transfer to external drive , this will slow things down. Also the speed quoted for USB of 480 Mb/s is burst speed not continuous.

If it's of any help I have the same problem, so I have the card reader plug straight into a USB port on the computer and the drives , via a hub are on another. It does make things quicker.
