Using Grad Filters Help....

Hey folks I'm wondering if there is a guide to using filters anywhere, I've recently purchased a few Grad Filters, a Lee Little Stopper and a set of Soft ND Grads.
The Little Stopper is easy enough to use but I'm struggling with how I "should" be using the grads, more from a point of view of working out when to use them and how to expose properly and I wondered if there was a guide any where?
