UV Filters - Good/Bad - alternatives?

I always buy a UV filter to protect the front of my lenses an old habit from film days), and have recently started using the PRO1As from Hoya.

I have seen some posts that suggest this might not be sensible as it reduces image quality.

Any thoughts, alternatives to protect the front of the lens?

Any startling examples of with/without/alternatives?

From a personal point of view I don't use 'protective' filters unless I'm in a dusty/damp environment (beach for instance). I do always use a hood though.

This is one of those topics that everyone has a personal opinion on and you'll find people in both camps (hood or filter).
If you do use a filter get a good multi-coated one, it's pointless putting £5 worth of cheap glass in front of that expensive lens!
Just watch out for flare problems when shooting into the sun.

As I say, I'm sure you will get lots of differing opinions about this subject...

Always use them as I would rather clean the filter then the lens and I don't think the image quality is derogated by much or any to be honest plus any toning corrections can be done in software if needed.
