hello, im looking to buy a UV filters for my lens is there any type of UV filter that would fit both my 18-55 mm lens and my 55-200 mm lens (for a Nikon D3000) thanks in advanced people :)

Unless the lens diameters are the same you won't get a filter to fit both. You could buy the larger size diameter UV filter then buy a step up adapter ring. Most people buy UV filters for protection though and because of this don't ever remove them.

As Donki says one filter for each lens for protection, they're only a few pounds from 7dayshop.com and make sure you grab multi-coated ones to minimise the risk of flare.

And put glass worth a few pounds on the front of hundreds/thousands of pounds worth of optics?

Trying to research it, half the time people insists that you NEED a UV filter for protection, the other half say to NEVER use one unless it's a quality one.

welcome to the never-ending story of the wonders of "The UV Question ".....................:lol:

I use a hoya pro filters on my lens and have done a few test shots, I see no loss in quality with or without a filter. Sometimes I do get a bit more glare but thats it.

No need to reasearch due to using expensive lenses in often messy conditions for years. I notice no difference in normal shooting using a multicoated UV - even a cheap one from 7day shop- unless shooting against strong light as I sometimes do on family photoshoots in the parks. I might then take the filter off.

Incidently I just bought a sigma 50mm f1.4 and shooting fully open against very strong light such as setting sun shows zero flare, first time I've seen this. John

P.s no filter on Sigma yet!!!!!

people with UV filters - see above - probably use them for "Protection" than anything else as the sensors in use today already have a built-in UV filter

If you just need protection get.......

Marumi 52mm DHG Protector.....from Crooked Image
or
Hoya HD 52mm Protector.........I presently have one in the "Sales"

I'm using a Marumi DHG C.PL and a DHG Protector on my 72mm Sigma - very impressed
