Hi all

Having just got a refund on my 24-70L I was hoping to get a replacement from warehouse express today before the VAT increase.

I have just been onto their site and from the looks of things something as happend and their prices are now all showing with the VAT increase already??

I had phoned them yesterday just to see how much the same lens would be come the 4th and the price they are now showing is about the same as what I got quoted. I do however have the lens still in my basket from yesterday and it is still showing the original price even after updating.

can anyone confirm this for me as there are a few other things that I was going to get but it looks like I might have to get them from elsewhere if this is right.

I saw a plumbing spares site do the same. I think some people are just dim and think it is 1st of Jan not 4th!

Last night their Price for the 24-70L was £928 (I still have it in my basket at that price).
I have just gone to double check prices and they are now showing it at £999, Now what im wondering is whether their pricing system has applied the increase from today instead of the 4th BY ACCIDENT. All of their prices look like they have gone up over night aswell as I was looking maybe getting a grip and a few other things. I cannot get in contact with them however to see if there has been a mistake made.

If they are showing the VAT rate as 20% then they're breaking the law....
Not necessarily. They can't dispatch anything now until Tuesday. So the key question is, if you order something on their web site now, when is the contract actually formed? You'd need to delve through their small print to work that out.

Most online stores will not bill your card until the goods are dispatched. Which usually means that there is no contract of sale until the order is accepted and the goods are dispatched.

That price difference is NOT due to the VAT increase. The change in VAT would take it to £947.74 - not £999

VAT is charged at the rate prevailing on the day of supply. Usually this means the day the invoice is generated. I would imagine ordering now from many sites will result in dispatch, and billing, to take place on the 4th with the higher rate of VAT applied.

jessops have it for 929-00 buy it through quidco and get 4% cashback and pick it up in store

blooming hell thats cheap.

Is that UK stock or an import? I have never used them before what is there service etc... like?

thanks in advance

Hi

Not used delivery side from Wilkinson Cameras - they're round the corner from us, but I can def recommend them, I've used our local branch several times and have always found them very helpfull, knowledgable and reliable. I wouldn't have thought you'd have any issues from them re delivery.

AND they are offering a 2 year warrenty on the lens, with free delivery at the moment !!

Usually when the item is dispatched.

this. we have to get all pre-VAT change orders "despatched" (can be marked as despatched on the warehouse software) before the 4th so that it gets invoiced correctly at time of despatch.

anything despatched (hence invoiced) on the 4th onwards will get invoiced at the new rate.

if their warehouse doesnt have staff until the 4th it may account for the increase in price already.

Might be putting prices up ready for the "SALE"!

Cynic that I am . . . listening to a radio 4 program the other day . . . The guy on there said, there are going to be a lot of "price increases on Jan 4th" to coincide with VAT rise . . . looks like Warehouse Express fall into this . . . thinking we cant work out what a 2.5% rise is . . .

thing is with prices of fuel rocketing the cost of shipping goods is also on the rise so price hikes are always going to happen.. whether WEX have put prices up in proportion to this is another matter.

or i could be wrong and theyre just being cheeky.

Judging by the fact that a lot of people here seem to think that an increase in the VAT of 2.5% on a £1000 item would mean a price rise of £25 they may well be correct.....

Which is a pathetic excuse from them as most ecommerce tools calculate it automatically as you enter the ex-vat price and have the vat rate in there separately so one click to change it to 20% would work across the entire site.

20% is easier to work out in your head anyway! 10% twice. 17.5% was a pain as it was 10% plus half of 10% plus a half of the previous if you wanted to do mental arithmetic.

true, at least for us. we update the master VAT record on our production systems which then replicates the new prices across the stores tills and ecomm platform.

A £1000 inclusive item before the increase should be £1021.28 on the 4th. That's an increase of 2.128% - not 2.5%

But we all know that it doesn't work out that simple in real life. Whilst some retailers will be rounding up, some will round down. And then there will be those who will be taking the opportunity to announce some significant increases to coincide with the VAT increase. It looks like Warehouse Express is doing this :(

Amazon have put the price of the Canon S95 and the 64gb ipod touch up by £10 in the last two days. The Canon actually went up twice, once by £10 then a further 60p the next day.
I know this as I've been hovering about waiting to order to get the delivery times right.

Amazon prices fluctuate a lot anyway - it all depends on what they manage to buy stuff in at. I always find that is amazon have something at a really good price buy it and take the hit on when it will be delivered.

Indeed - Amazon had the 7D at £1070 for quite a while last year but it's now shot back up to £1124 (a few weeks ago, not now to coincide with the VAT increase).

I daresay there will be all sorts of wheezes to "hide" larger increases.

Those old enough to remember currency decimalisation will doubtless remember some of the really creative cons doing the rounds then !

i just read that fitness first have put their prices up 14% plus the VAT increase and next have put theirs up 8% plus the VAT increase..

i think companies are starting to struggle to be honest.

Amazon seem to be doing some strange things price-wise. The Nikon D3x has gone from £4908 (3rd Jan) to £5108 (4th Jan) to £5399 (5th Jan). That's a 10% increase more or less.

£5013 is the new price. £4178 before VAT. £4178 + 20% = £5013.6.You are getting off lightly. Working into decimal places you are being done.
