Very basic mobile phone question

My OH has finally relented and decided to go smart phone and has been given an iPhone SE. However for a variety of reasons she can't be without her existing number for more than a few hours. She's currently with Virgin and will be moving to Tesco Mobile.

Looking online normally you would get a PAC but I'm uncertain if the new phone is unlocked and potentially this could leave her without a number for a couple of days, which would be a concern currently.

I'm thinking the way to go would be to get a new number from Tesco to see if the phone is unlocked and then see if she can move her existing number across to the new phone.

Can anyone please confirm my thinking is OK or is there an alternative solution
 
Yeah that will work fine. The number *may* be down for a small number of hours though. IIRC they warn you it can be up to 4 hours but when I've done it it hasn't been more than several minutes.
