Are all 3rd party Canon 'fit' lenses - Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc EF fit or are there also EF-S equivalents ?

Hope that question makes sense. I just want to ensure anything non-Canon that I pick up for a 40D will also work on a 1DII.

They are all EF, but some will not be suitable for full frame. I think for sigma lenses, DC denotes a crop body only lens.

I know that Sigma's DC lenses (which have a smaller image circle for APS-C, like Canon's EF-S lenses) all have an EF mount, so you can mount them on any EOS camera without the mirror hitting the back. This just means that DC lenses will vignette.

I am not sure about the other manufacturers, but I think this applies for them too - Canon seem to be the only one who apply the rear gasket to their EF-S lenses.

Sigma and Tamron both do full frame and APS-C lenses.

Sigma DG lenses are full frame, DC are small sensor. Tamron DiI are full frame and DiII are small sensor. Dunno about Tokina but a quick call to a dealer or some Googling might give you and answer.

Cheers folks.

The 1DII isn't full frame but it is a 1.3 crop so having read your posts I guess I should be classing it as one.

APS-H is a bit of an oddball. You'd be right to think about using lenses designed for full frame unless you want some creative vignetting :)

that's your best bet for APS-H. Will be roughly as wide as a 16-35 at the wide end.

Cheers - That was kind of my thinking as I wanted something on my 1D = to my 10-20 on the 40D

My only concern with Sigma is that they are often reverse engineer their lens to work with Canon bodies, so just be sure it was made after your body was made and it will work.

I've not even checked what age my 1DII is but despite being 'mint' it's obviously a fair age.
