Hi guys,

when recording on my 5D Mkii there is a very distinct whirring sound in the background. It sounds similar to when the camera is set to servo and the lens is working overtime but when recording it's on manual focus.

Just wondering if anyone experiences the same and if there is anything I can do about it?

Have you got IS switched on while recording video?

nope, it's all done through live view.

you can purchase a zacuto z finder which attaches to the back of the screen to act as a viewfinder -will set you back £250 ish

Another thing :D

Is there any way of using the viewfinder rather than the LCD screen for recording as I'm having a tough time gaging what is in focus on the screen

Thanks

Iain

if you can see thro the view finder the mirror would be down so you not be able to film anything

if you're running for a viewfinder either record the audio seperately and stitch or get a hotshoe boom mic then you can keep IS and have better quality audio

highly recommend the Rode VideoMic for this, its not stereo, but does a very good job @ £79.99

Don't forget you can use the HDMI output whilst filming. With a larger monitor you get a bigger liveview pic

BUT on the 5d2 you don't get full res, you get standard def. So not that much use for focussing. Get a loupe, but then you do need the various rods and grips etc to get it in the right place so that you can look through it, while still having the support from your shoulder.

Check out vincent laforet, phillip bloom, and dan chung's various sites. Couple of them are speaking at the canon pro roadshow in london in a couple weeks if you can make it down.

may not be full hd but it would still be better than the lcd screen on the back if you outputted to a larger monitor

I've got a Z-Finder and left a quick review in the review section. Feel free to ask if there's any questions should you fancy a trip down this route.

how much did it cost you bob and where did you buy it from? also how long to deliver?

Also consider the LCDVF, I've tried one of these on a 7D and its excellent, I'll be buying one for my 550D very soon.

I picked mine up from BPM Video in Germany (bear in mind I'm in France so working in Euros normally). The item was in stock and took about a week to arrive....excellent service from the guys there.

My first version was the LCDVF but the lack of diopter adjustment screwed me. The difference between the two loupes is exactly what you'd expect from the price difference...self adhesive mounting for the LCDVF versus a custom bracket for Zacuto product.

I've just had a LCD viewfinder delivered this morning from photosolve.com Well made bit of kit, aluminium not plastic, went for eyecup and universal bracket as well to avoid sticking it to the screen, $92.30 including delivery. Need to go and play now :)
