Don't really like the white cloth thing being him in the second pic, what do you think?
 
Those old Mediterranean features are so photogenic aren't they? nicely done (y)I agree though the background is slightly distracting, perhaps a quick " desaturate" in PS?
 
Can't work out why they both seem a touch blurred. First one could be movement blur. second one some of his hat and some of his shirt look reasonably sharp but his face doesn't.

Shame as they are good character studies.
 
They're both taken with the kit 18-55 lens on my 350D but I think the problem is using too small an aperture and consequently getting an exposure that is too slow. Both were f19 at 1/8th of a second and the first is cropped more than the second

Robert I agree the second one isn't as bad as the first as you say but strangely the face is the only bit I did sharpened (in PSP7). Maybe I need to experiment with the settings a bit more, I'm new to post shot processing so don't really know what to look for. I'll have to read some of the tutorials.
