You could try keeping task manager running during a test session to see which process (if any) maxes out when the machine freezes. That might give you a pointer.

Thanks. I'll try that. I don't want to reformat if I can help it, because I'm not confident of doing this on my own, but I won't have much choice here in rural Scotland.
