Decided to build a media pc for the living room. Got Vista home basic because I wanted to use 4mb memory. Everything is fine but Vista is doing my head in, is there some way to stop it treating me like a 4yr old zombie sun reader?

Vista has decided that the drivers it chose are best for this hardware so **** orf and stop trying to upgrade them!

It reminds me of the Harry Enfield character, "You don't wanna do it like that, you wanna do it like this!" aaaargh!
 
Sadly I think you are going to be stuck with being brassed off.
I have had Vista for about 6 months now and have spent hours tweaking it and changing every setting you can think of to get a smoother ride out of it..... and I still hate it!

Windows 7 is said to fix most of the areas that Vista cocked up..

:lol: I think that's the right thing...I planned to do it ages ago but thought it would take a while, so bookmarked it and never got round to it! Just done it seeing as it takes 20 seconds but it wants a reboot!
 
Thanks purpleclouds :) stupid thing is I could have put windows 7 beta on it (and saved myself £70) but didn't think to. I have that on my main pc and love it.
 
Another tweak for Vista is to disable the 'Aero' user interface, unless you really want it. It's pretty intensive on your GPU and RAM, and you'll notice an improvement in performance if you disable it. Although it does look good! :D

No problem! :) Doesn't the winfows 7 beta run out in August?
 
Yes but I'll splash out on the released version when it comes out.
 
About the first thing I did was turn Vista user account control OFF.
The second was to make it look as much like "classic" windows as possible and then set it to adjust for best performance rather than appearance.

Basically Vista seems pretty stable, but in it's native form just gets in the way too much.
 
I quite liked XP, Vista seemed like an upgrade but there are too many annoyances, Windows 7 looks very nice. I have Windows 7 ultimate installed on one of my Windows PCs with Vista ultimate.
 
I went the other way and downgraded to XP Professional on my new Dell laptop, after Vista home premium kept annoying me. Randomly changing folder views was the worst bug :bang:

Vista ran OK in 4gb of memory, but XP absolutely flies along. It does everything I want it to, and is rock-solid with all the latest updates. Firefox and NoScript means no chance of picking up spyware from the web. Tried and tested technology wins over cutting-edge tech every time for me :)

I maintain that the best time to install an OS is when the next version is released :)

I tried Vista 64 at the end of last year.

It was slower than XP64, the UAC thingie was definitely meant for folk with nappies and the folder finder system did my head in.

So been back on XP64 for a few months and it is going like a wee train.
 
don't use home versions of vista, get ultimate it works properly and is actually quite good

And if you don't play the games...get Business...all the bloat stripped out, and runs like a dream :)
