Hi,

I am off to the Maldives.
Taking my D300s, so should get some nice pics.

However, what should I use for snorkelling.

Tempted with the following:-

1. Disposable at £4each plus processing
Only you don't know what you have pictured.

Or

2. Waterproof compact at £100 max.

Any recommendations.

I wouldn't go for the disposable. Even "just" snorkelling the shots you can get are astounding. I'd definitely go for a digital compact of some sort. Either waterproof or with a waterproof housing. When we went I took my Sony T-100 and bought a waterproof housing for it which worked pretty well. Just remember to take a few spare memory cards as you'll need them ;-)

(We found out on our last day that the resort we stayed at would transfer our shots to DVD for free if we'd asked, so it's worth checking. Bear in mind though if you're going anytime soon it'll be rainy season, so your visibility for snorkelling may be limited at some times of the day)
 
I'm considering the same for this years holiday. I may end up getting a Canon D10 as this seems to be the best all rounder, but this is nearer £200
For around £100 the Lumix DMC-TS1 is supposed to be good.

A few years ago, I took a few of the disposables away for snorkelling use and was less than impressed with the results. IIRC, they used ISO800 film which was grainier than a sandy beach and barely better tyhan nothing. I then bought an Olympus µ770SW which was quite good until a couple of years ago when it ceased to be waterproof. I now have a Canon D10 which gives far better (in my eyes) results above water than the OLY did and has also remained (so far) waterproof!
 
Thanks Nod - nice to know. I'm considering it for our youngest so he's not tempted to take his dslr.
 
i bought the Pentax W10 a few years ago for the same reasons. I cannot fault it for using when snorkelling, in the pool or on just on the beach. There maybe newer pentax models out there now but i can recommend the W10 if you can find it used.

there is of course the Samsung WP10 which my brother bought and likes. there's a review here: http://www.ephotozine.com/article/samsung-wp10-waterproof-digital-camera-review-14579 and i think you can still get them for around the £100 mark.
 
i've got a 7 day old olympus tough 3000 only used in the pool with my 2 year old brought from gran canaria new with full international warranty, would be willing to sell.

A friend of mine has an Olympus Tough compact, not sure on which model, but I had a play about with it down at the beach, and it seemed like a fairly nice camera and would be great to use underwater. :)

I have their large size camera case (I also have the VHF case and a phone one). Had it about 5 years now to take photos when we are towing people with my jet ski on the sea.

The case works great and never lets water in (I haven't snorkled with it, but have dunked it and left it floating in the sea while we were messing about in the shallows swapping drivers etc). I have never noticed a massive degradation to IQ from my old crappy P&S, but when we are using it whoever is taking the photos is usually travelling at approx 30mph facing backwards holding on to the ski with one hand on a choppy sea, so the photos aren't great anyway! ;)

I've got one of those. Seem pretty indestructible, though a bit more pricey than OP was thinking. I've used mine under water, and in minus 15 degrees of frost with no problems.

Whats the image quality like on the one you had for sale? I did see it, but am not going till september so wanted to do some reading up!

What are the fuji XP30's like?

Me too.

I'm going in august so in no massive rush, I'm currently trying to decide between getting an aquapack for my D90 or a compact.

Even though I'll be taking the D90 anyway at the moment I'm leaning towards an underwater compact. Haven't decided yet if I'll get a normal camera with housing or a purpose built waterproof.

i don't think i would trust an aquapack on my D90. get a compact for water shots if it's just for random shots.

I have a D40 (wanting the D90 next) but I dont think i'd want to do the aqua bag or what ever either! I just want a small camera we can throw around and not worry too much about it!

You looked at those Fuji's? The picture reviews are not the best... so i hear!

i went from a D40 to a Sony A300 back to a Nikon D90 and can't fault it.

yeah for just over £100 just get a compact that you won't worry about. yes IQ won't be as good, but being on holiday enjoy the moment and capture some images as memories
 
I'm really tempted to pick up an x 30... looks a fun camera, gps is cool to have on holiday, and end of the day a point and shoot is a point and shoot...

Yeah thats what we are heading towards to be honest! The picture reviews are not great tho!
 
There doesn't seem to be a lot on waterproof compacts on the forum... But just looking for a little bit of advice..

Got down to 3 cameras...
Canon powershot D10 about £120 on Ebay
Olympus tough 3000 prob about £100
Or the fuji film xp 30 or xp30s (not sure of the difference) £123

Any advice on the above 3 camera's please!
