I broke my own record for building a wordpress site and theme from scratch. Still got some work to do but would appreciate feedback on the following site please.

It uses Wordpress and the Blueprint CSS framework as well as Lightbox 2 and some custom javascript. Also in there is phpThumb.

I've still got a work to do on the blog listing page and individual articles and galleries.

Also I realise it lacks colour, but I'm hoping the content can contribute the colour to the site. I've gone for a nice clean grid based system using only black and white. 6 hours non-stop. My hands and neck are killing me, and so will my wife no doubt. Time to sneak into the bed...

Tomorrow I'll be putting all the content back in.
 
There is a little bit too much white for my eyes tbh. You pages load OK, but have a slight lag, nothing to worry about though. Your 'About' page is lacking something .. maybe a self portrait? :shrug: There just seems to be a little too much space. The only other thing is that until I clicked on your 'About' page I didn't realise the 'Web' page was made up of web sites you had designed, I thought it was your photography that was used, hence your linkage to the pages. Maybe a little bit of info at the top of that page wouldn't go a miss, just to clear that up.

Having been picky, I feel I need to give some balance .... so this is where I commend you on some really lovely images on your 'Photo' page :D I love the Taj Mahal one especially!

HTH, though I think you probably have a fair idea of what your doing anyway, since you do it for a living :thumbs:
 
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah the white space is something I need to address. I built this site in one night and decided to put it live before filling it properly with content :( my bad. I'll get that sorted.

I'm a web developer by trade but the design side of things I leave to professional web designers. For my own site though I like to give design a try. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails. Ha ha.

yeah! i like it a lot - the layout and basic colour scheme work brilliantly, very newspaper style, very nice.
 
erm, white on black would be worse what with the fact you are actually looking at a computer screen in the first place. total eye strain.

Im not being sarky, well almost not. i honestly hate white backgrounds, i use a lot of different monitors/computers and none are calibrated but most have the brightness/contrast set way too bright which blows my head off.

I did say in my original post "depending on the users monitor brightness"

A few hex points difference to the colour makes all the difference.
 
Don't take this the wrong way, but when I design a website I'm not thinking about how high someone has their brightness or contrast set. That's an issue with the user, not their browser or platform. It's ridiculous to assume web designers should be doing that.
 
Hi KayJay, not taken the wrong way but surely any "web designer" does exactly that and takes into account the end users views, after all thats exactly who a web designer is designing the site for.

OK you could say, well no its designed for a specific customer, but then surely that customer would want the designer to take into account his websites visitors who are the afore mentioned users.

To be fair, im at home on a calibrated monitor and your site looks fine but i bet it will blow my eyesight on every single computer/monitor i use at work tomorrow.

Us as photographers understand the need for calibrated monitors but unfortunatly the masses dont and neither to monitor manufacturers, i mean, just ask anyone who has opened a brand new Dell 2408 WFP monitor and theyll tell you as soon as they switched it on if felt like theyd just had laser surgery performed on their eyes.

So i guess the point i was trying to make is that you should be designing a website for the end user.

Anyway, onto the site content, i love the content, is all the photo work your own, the demo stuff is top class.
 
I totally agree about designing for the end user, but when it comes to monitor calibration that's where I draw the line :)

Thanks for the comments about the content. I've just updated the blog page to make it slightly easier to read but still trying to find a better way to organise the posts.
