Hi all,

Well I shot my first proper wedding yesterday and although a small affair [perfect for a first I thought] really enjoyed it and managed to do myself justice. It's led me to think about getting some more experience so was wondering what the best way would be to do that. Is it simply pick up the phone and start calling local wedding pro's to see if I can help out as second shooter?

Cheers

Kris

Can't hurt to ask, just don't be too shocked if you get no's from them all!!

Keep an eye out on here too, there's the occasional offer from time to time.....

The first two weddings I did as second shooter was as an introduction from a friend to her friend, the photographer. The next four or five I've done was as a connection with another photographer after shooting the special olympics in 2009. Put the word out with your friends and see what happens.

Thanks for that guys. I'm not naive enough to realise the competition element. In my case though I actually earn well in another profession so not thinking of anything other than to develop myself as a photographer and the only way that can happen is by regualar practice. I'm drawn towards portraiture naturally being a people person [i'm a salesman!] and now that friends and family are totally fed up of me I'm just pondering on the next step to improve myself.

Might help to state your location on here too, incase anyone has any opportunities - It does happen!

You can put it in your profile :)

EDIT: You're better off looking for photographers outside of your local area for experience, rather than on your doorstep too, someone 100 miles away from you wouldn't see you as competition, so might be more likely to offer you a 2nd spot

special olympics in 2009.

Must have been very special as Summer Olympics and Paralympics are in leap years, and the winters are in even years inbetween........

Back to the original question............

No harm in asking a pro - but expect lots of no's as they don't know you / you don't know then, their style, manner, way of shooting etc....... and why would they want to help you, when ultimately you aspire to be a competitor in their business market.......

On here is the occasional offer / invite...........

Be prepared to ask and try, ask and try.........

Good luck,

Don't be too quick to mock - google is your friend, Leicester 2009......

From the website;

What is Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is a global organisation that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to more than 2.25 million children and adults with learning disabilities across the globe. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of the late President John F Kennedy in 1968, Special Olympics provides people with learning disabilities opportunities to realise their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship
