Weird EXIF data

Well, another day of playing with the 80-200 has come and gone...

Pretty happy so far but as well as the juddery focus at 80mm for some weird reason when the lens is at 80mm the EXIF from both my D200 and D300 shows it as being at 100mm!

Now, I can't figure out quite how this would happen as I don't know whether the EXIF comes from the 'physical' lens setting i.e. if it is at 80, 105, 150 etc that is what it will show or whether it is correcting for focus shift. I'm not convinced by the latter because it is showing up as 100mm shots that were close to infinity.

The final possibility is that the lens' chip is playing up. In which case it will need to go back to the vendor for a swap!

I'd suggest you clean the electrical connectors on the lens and re-try. It might be that signals from the body aren't getting through properly?

Nikons are well known for issues surrounding the lens mounts and electronic connetions and there is one with the 80-200 and digital bodies like the D300, although it tends to manifest itself more as an aperture problem than a focal length one.

It doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem or fault with either component, it's just the way it is.
