Weird happenings with Tamron 24-70 using onboard flash

I have a Tamron 24-70 on a D7000 and for the first time today used it with the onboard flash. I noticed that after the shutter, the image in the viewfinder jumps and it make a knocking sound like one of the lens elements has moved. It does it as the image stabilisation shuts off.

I thought the lens was broken at first until I played around with it. I turned off the flash and set the shutter and aperture to the same as was metered for the flash, took the picture and it is perfect. I popped up the flash again and it went back to jumping the lens.

Is this possibility something to do with the flash wavelength being picked up by the lens? Has anyone experienced this?
 
I have the canon version and it doesn't appear to have the same problem for me so maybe related to Nikon and firmware fixable?

But then the Canon version doesn't have image stabilisation which I believe is what is moving the lens about after the shot.

It does (have VC)

Although the weirdest bit about this for me is someone buying a D800 and using onboard flash :confused:

I suspect they mean they have the same Tamron lens with a Canon mount rather than the Canon 24-70.
 
It most likely to be the VC at work. VC will lock the image when the focus is obtained and the shutter button is pressed. Then once exposure finishes the VC will disengage and so you see a slight jump. I experience the same thing on the 70-300 VC. But the noise isn't normal.


You can see it work if you held press the shutter button (or press the af-on) and hold it there then try move around a bit. The image in the view finder will jerk around. Quite weird but its a good test to see the VC working or not. Although this should happen regardless of flash on or off.

That doesn't explain why it only does it when I turn on the on-board flash.

Also as for your second point, it doesn't jump around at all when you move it around and have never seen that before if I'm honest.
 
Hmm...maybe the VC works very differently then. Can't imagine why tho. But it would explain the stutter but doesn't explain why you get it during flash mode only.
 
The canon mount version is the same 24-70 lens with VC so my thinking was if it only does it with the on board flash maybe it's just a firmware fix if it's a problem. Write to Tamron, if enough people do they'll probably look into it.
