What 50mm would you choose ?

In which case neither, I'd probably get a 35mm f/1.8, assuming you are putting it on a crop body such as your D300.

However, if I had to choose between the two you mention I'd take the zoom lens as it is more versatile

If you want a 50mm the Sigma 50mm f1.4 should IMVHO always be on the short list.

35mm is not the most flattering portrait lens.

The Nikkor 50mm 1.8D is excellent value for money and a good sharp lens, just zoom with your feet!

Are you trying to choose between a 50mm and the 18-55? If yes can i through a curve ball and suggest the tamron 17-50.

This!

Had the 35 f1.8, the tamron and the 50 f1.8. All good, tamron was versatile and a belter for the money.

At around £380 (old price - no fresh ad to hand!) for the Sigma compared to £160 (same age price) for the f/1.8 Nikkor, they're not really on similar shortlists.

Personally, I would go for an 18-70 old kit lens for now and keep my eyes open for a 50mm f/1.8 (or f/1.4) on 2nd hand shelves while saving for it.
