What 85mm?

I have a Nikon FF camera and am looking to buy a 85mm lens, I shoot mainly young children up to teens.

Im looking between the Nikon 85mm 1.4D, the Nikon 85mm 1.8G or the Sigma 85 1.4G :shrug:

Has anyone got/used these and can recommend which one might be better, at the moment Im thinking of the Sigma because of the reviews Ive read but wanted to make sure that Im doing the right thing!

I have both the D and G Nikons. Both are amazingly sharp and fast to focus, with the G being slightly faster. What tips the scale in favour of the G is its flare handling and edge-to-edge sharpness. As a consequence of this, I did contemplate selling the D (there is a used one for sale in the respective forum, not mine :) ).

Sorry, not had any experience with the Sigma version.

Thank you, im still reading reviews and the new 1.8G seems to be getting great reviews and at a great price - the 1.4G is out of my price range right now!
 
I think, unless you're shooting a lot of sparkly stuff, in to the light, and / or need corner to corner sharpness then the D version is amazingly good. Has great colour rendition, lovely Bokeh and is very reasonably priced.
 
I looked at those 3 lenses and went for the 1.4D, pretty happy with my choice, wouldn't swap the lens.
 
Is there much of a difference between the older 1.8 and the new G, aside from the obvious.
 
Id go for the Sigma, from what Ive seen/read its amazing. Im currently using the 50mm 1.4 on a D700, great lens.
 
Not a Nikon shooter myself, but all reviews and MTF charts are brilliant for the new 1.8G. For the price and performance it is a no brainer. If that half a stop extra is a must, it will cost a more than half as much, and probably penalise corner sharpness down the line.
