What advantages does a Minolta 50mm bring over my Tamron 28-75 f2.8?

currently have sony a300 with tamron 28-75 f2.8, always hear the nifty fifty being good, but is it worth the outlay for one?

main use will be for amateur family/ people shots

check back through your photos & see how many were taken ~50mm & wide open.
I suspect that you have little to gain.

I (& I know several other stories of similar) sold my 50/1.7 because it had hardly been used in 10 years ...

Nifty-50 does low f/number, that's all. F/1.7 in your case I think, which is one and a half stops lower than f/2.8.

If you like the narrow depth of field you get at that aperture, that's what you'll get. It's quite a good focal length for portraits on a crop camera, but not much else TBH.

Basically, nifty-50 is cheap, different and fun. There's a long nifty-50 appreciation thread going on here right now somewhere.

thanks

food for thought there
