What are my options?

Next year sometime i am thinking of upgrading camera bodies. I have been looking at the Canon 40D, but, i would like to know from people, firstly what they think of this model, and secondly, what are the equivalent bodies from other manafacturers. All information and guidance is very much appreciated, also if people have rough ideas of the prices of the other units. Thanks a lot, Darren
