What Bit depth to use on a D3s

ON my D3s, it has a NEF (RAW) recording setting either 12 or 14 bit depth ..................what is it and what should I set it at???

Also I remember some time back my NEF files were +/- 40 MB each but now they only seem to be +/- 10 MB each and all my settings seem to be unchanged, maybe I misread it first time but I am quite sure I did not??

Well I go with 14bit on my D700 as that still gives me 605 shots on a 16GB card @ 25MB per shot.

Storage is cheap these days so may as well go with the best quality settings.
 
Just remembered that as well as the 12bit/14bit choice there is also a choice of uncompressed/compressed lossless/compressed.

I normally leave it set on 14bit and uncompressed
 
I missed that last bit, now I have it set at 14 and uncompressed and the pictures sizes have doubled ................thanks again guys
 
I see no point in leaving them uncompressed :thinking:

Lossless compression is exactly that, lossless... Surely you are just filling up storage for the sake of it?

I have actually discovered there is an advantage to having a hard drive fill up with RAWs - it means that I have a real incentive to go through and remove all the useless ones. It's all too easy to fire off hundreds of shots and then put off "pruning" them down.
