What card reader?

Want to get myself a card reader as its a PITA to always connect the camera up to transfer images!

Can anyone recommend any decent, but reasonably priced SD card readers?

Either pay £3 for one that's a little slow, or about £15/20 for fast one, the choice is yours

Lexar for speed. I also have some SanDisk readers that have been faultless for years.

^^^ That's the SanDisk one I have as well. And yes, you CAN use it without the weird stand (although you need a separate usb A - miniusb cable)

I got this for when I had my D300s Lexar dual reader but still use it for my D700 (cf card) but its still handy as OH has a SDHC card for her camera otherwise I would've sold it on by now....

I just use £1 card reader from Poundland with SDHC support; average reading speed is 10MB/s with PNY 8GB Class 4. More than enough for me

I got this for when I had my D300s Lexar dual reader but still use it for my D700 (cf card) but its still handy as OH has a SDHC card for her camera otherwise I would've sold it on by now....

I highly recommend this one in Trig's post - it is noticeably quicker than the half dozen or so cheapies that I own - and very worthwhile when downloading an 8GB card full.

I use the CF slot and 'er indoors uses the SD.

lexar for me.. blows my el cheapo reader out of the water for transfer rates.

This sandisk one is "Up to 34MB/s read/write speeds"...

Also, does the transfer speeds depend on the speed of the card?

i compared mine and approx:

my old cheapo 2.0 reader = 15mb/s download
lexar pro = 30mb/s download

obviously the transfer rate of your memory card will also affect speeds.

I got one for a tenner from Tesco at the weekend, don't know how quick it is but it's at least ten times faster than doing it from the camera so it's ok for me!

Both the Lexar and Sandisk UDMA readers will be limited by either the card speed or the USB speed. They should both be roughly the same.

Transfer speed up to the USB limit of 30-40 MB/s will depend on the card, specifically if it is UDMA-enabled or not. Most of the recent, decent, faster cards will be.

Bought a Mobile Computing one a week or so ago, used the missus SD card and my CF card works a treat.
