What CPL filter to get for the 18-55mm?

Yes
I read that this lens has a slightly unusual filter diameter, and that 58mm CPL's aren't really sought after. It's going to be a bit of a nuisance in that case, having to buy another CPL filter just for this lens, especially when I plan on getting shut of it soonish.

I've got the 52mm Hoya HD, which I gather is the best quality CPL you can generally, other than the Lee one. I've pondered just buying a step-up ring, but would that cause a lot of vignetting at the wider angles?

I don't really want to splash out £50+ for a 58mm Hoya HD if I'm getting rid of the lens soon and I won't have any use for the 58mm after that. Unless however, I buy a step-down ring and replace my 52mm with the new 58mm and use that on the lenses with the 52mm thread. Again, I have no idea if that would cause vignetting on my 50mm f1.8 lens.

Decision time.. anybody got some suggestions or opinions on what the best course of action is?

Step-down ring + A Hoya HD 58mm CPL (Can then later use on my 50mm f1.8 and replace my slightly worn 52mm CPL)
Step-up ring for my 52mm CPL

or..

A cheap 58mm CPL, no more than £20 though..

Thanks. :)

dont know about Camlink but read a post about Kood sometime ago - not impressed

Marumi filters scored higher than Hoya Pro-1 Digital in an independent lab test for C-PLs
admittedly the Hoya HD C-PL wasn't tested

i bought a 72 Marumi DHG - the 58mm is listed at Clifton Cameras = £41 "here"

I'd have thought if you put a 52mm filter on a 58mm lens, you'll get worse than vignetting! It wouldn't so much be dark corners as looking down a smartie tube :D

I'd suggest either sell the 52mm filter, and get a 58mm and some stepping rings, or got the whole hog and get a 77mm filter. You'll probably be upgrading to lenses with 77mm filters at some point in the future anyway!

An alternative would be a cokin, or lee system. Then you have a whole host of large, square filters, and just buy a cheap adaptor ring for each lens size you have. Like stepping rings, but without the hassle and vingetting (except on UWA lenses)

If you are really in to using CPL's, then why not bite the bullet and buy a B&W 105mm CPL- then you wont have problems with filter sizes:)

The Lee CPL one is more prone to vignetting hence the B&W mention

you prob know - but there is a Cokin wide-angle filter holder

but it only has 1 slot for 1 filter whereas the regular holder has 3 slots

Interesting, I hadn't considered getting one with a thread size any larger than 58mm. Future lenses that I plan on buying are the 10-22mm and 70-200mm f4L, which both have a filter thread sizes of 77mm and 67mm respectively, would I be likely to get vignetting using a step-up ring + 105mm CPL on either of those lenses? Obviously I expect there to be some on the 10-22mm, but I do hope it's not too much at the widest angle.

Marumi sounds like an interesting choice too, I've seen them mentioned quite a bit lately..

Thanks for the replies!
