What do better flashes do that cheaper ones don't (in english ;) )

I've got the Nikon SB400 flash which has no adjustment on, you can tilt the head up to various angles.

What do more expensive flashes do?

I know they swivel and they can be masters for triggering multiple flashes, but what else do they do? and what do you really need/use?
 
I did a comparison between the SB600 and SB900 at night and the amount of light from the SB900 was far far the greater. Don't know about the SB400 but the SB900 is very very easy to set up with a display for every setting. OK the SB900 is a heavy bit of kit and costs a good few quid but once you have one you never look back. Have to say I am so impressed with the SB900 I am seriously considering getting another. They can also act as a commander to trigger other SB's which the SB600 can't do. Have a look at some of the youtube demos.

One area where 'better' flashes(I hesitate to use "more expensive" despite the assumed correlation) can excel is when used beyond the normal sync speed. High speed sync requires the unit to emit a series of flashes and 'better' units will usually have a higher and smoother output.

That's what I like about the SB400. Turn it on or off and shoot. All adjustment is via flash exposure comp. I've been using mine for about a year now. I find it limiting:

- When I want to light up a bright scene and not just use a little fill
- when I want to fill something that is a good ways away
- when I am shooting portrait with ceiling bounce
- when I'm in the mood to play with off camera flash

How often do I find these to be problems? Not very. For most situations the SB400 does just fine and I like the small size. I leave it on my D90 most of the time and it fits in all of my bags easily. Just every now and then though, I wish I had a little more. If I could sell the 400 for £100 and buy a 600 for $175 I probably would.
