Yes
What do we do with are photos
1 put them on our PC never to look at them again
2 Print them out so everybody can see then
3 Sell them and make some cash(weddings etc}
Apart from 3 why do
we spend many thousands of pounds on equipment just to say ,look what i have.
years ago in the film era a guy at the camera club had a Pentax K1000 with a 28 50 and 135 lens and won nearly ever comp had plus his darkroom he had a second hand enlarger
Has photography become a equipment show now with Photoshop and the likes or do we think i can sort that in Phtoshop when i get home
The big question is what do we do with our photography and do we need all the gear we have(I am at fault here myself)
So lets all go out and buy a Fuji X10 and be happy I have been a member of a few camera clubs an have left because of the attitude towadrs equipment rather than than the print on paper

Why does anybody spend money on any hobby?
It is not necessarily what we do with our photos, but the enjoyment they give us.
I got Photoshop 5 as a Christmas present, (my daughter got it cheap for me) I fully except I will never use it to its full potential, but I can spend hours playing around with it. In part because of Photoshop I am revisiting my old photographs.

Never been into this look what I have mentality, because I except that photography has very little to do with the equipment and a lot more to do with the person taking the shot.

People spend money on stuff they like. Why do you suggest a Fuji X10 rather than something cheaper that 'does the job' - because you like Fuji X10s? Most people don't need a vehicle any more highly specced or priced than a Perodua - but most people spend a lot more and buy much higher specced.

I dont have a Fuji X10 but will get one soon, the Fuji is just a example too what people can buy and get decent photos that they need.

The picture is the final result of a technical/creative process. Some people may spend a lot of money on equipment, others don't. Motivations are all different too, so is equipment requirements. You are just trying to convince yourself that you need a new camera really.

I 'need' all the gear I have, I have a diminishing 'need' for all the gear on my 'to buy' list, some of it is almost a 'need' some of it is 'it'd be nice to have'.

Most of the 'nice to have' is minor improvements to the gear I already have.

But I'm far from a gearhead and it's years since I bought anything of real note. (hence I'd like at least one body upgrade in the foreseeable - probably another 7d)

I make a lot of my equipment
Some of which is designed for a specific shoot. But as for what i have bought, well they are just tools to help me achieve the creative output i desire. I have never looked at my kit and thought, wow that's some moneys worth. I look at it and think, wow what can i make with this.
Some of my work goes up on my website, some gets printed but so far only one has been bought lol
Im not really concerned about selling my images as they are personal to me and recently photography has been more of support to my mental health than anything else.

As others have said, it's a hobby......

I used to play cricket 2-3 times a week, spend several hundred quid on equipment, club/match fees with no hope of representing my county or country. I did it because I enjoyed it and the same goes with my photography.

OK, I rarely print photos myself but most of them go on Facebook and I share them with friends/family, in fact I'd say more people see them on their than if I was to print them and keep them in an album at home ;)

For most amateurs, the amount of money spent on kit is dictated by the amount of disposable income and the desire to try and take better photos.

There are times when my 7D/100-400mm combo is lacking (grey Saturday afternoon in December at Rugby) but I can't justify the £3K+ price tag of an f2.8 prime or the better low light capabilities of a 5DMIII or 1DX.

At the moment I don't think there's any equipment I "need"..... a 10-22mm might be a useful addition to my 15-85mm but I feel the novalty might wear off quickly, another mid-range zoom with constant aperture could be useful but there aren't many situation where I can't use my flash or my 50mm f1.8

However, if I had bottomless pockets............. ;)

I disagree, or at least have an opposite opinion. Personally I only print pictures for competition or exhibition. I gave up on albums years ago. I put images on my blog, on flickr, share them with all sorts of people. Cheaper too. I don't see the argument for "2 Print them out so everybody can see them" unless your 'everybody' are immediate friends and family.

Apart from specialist-type photography - thinking macro or sports - most people will be able to just use an iPhone and sales of 'traditional' compacts and small dslrs will become a thing of the past in a few years ...
