What would be the essentials in your kit?

I've got a Canon 400d, a tamron 70-200, and the kit lens that came with the camera and a tripod.

I haven't got a clue where to start with lenses and what is best for what, and i also don't understand about the glass, is some better than others?

HELP!!!!
 
I think you have pretty much everything you need to make a good start, only upgrade your stuff when you need to becuse it isn't delivering the results you want/need and you know it's a kit problem not a technique one. Only things I would consider adding that you don't have are some filters (Circ Pol and some grads) and possibly a nifty for low light work.
