What lens for portraits (on a D300) ?

I've recently upgraded to a D300, and am considering buying some better glass, initially for portraits. I'm using a 55 - 200 VR at present and don't have a huge budget, so will be looking for something second hand. Any recommendations ?

Thanks

A 105mm is a nice lens for portraits...go for the Nikon obviously if you can!

Not my first choice, for most people I feel this would be bit too long.

For portraits, primes are the best to go for. Did use a 50mm 1.8 on my D300 but recently went for the 1.4 AFS version. Both are very good, 1.8 is around £100 which is a bargain!!! The 1.4 is better - £170 odd better? Not sure but it is nicer and would not go back to the 1.8.

You obviously have 35mm and 85mm versions so really depends on the focal length you need. 50mm 1.8 is a great start though.
