Yes
I'm going to get a body only 40 or 50d in the next few days.
what lens can i get for quite cheap, that is dairly good? thanks in advance

There is the much under-rated 18-55mm f3.5/5.6 IS lens - better than the price would have you believe.

A lot of ex-kit 18-55 IS lenses available around £60-£70 second hand. If you want dealer second hand, there's 3 on MPB Photo at £79 at the mo. Don't get the cheaper non-IS variant though, image quality is not as good.

Do you need one?

a fifty on a crop is a bit too limiting for me as on only lens, you really notice the lack of width when shooting scenary type shots.

If money is tight I would echo other peoples advise of the IS kit lens, it was very well recieved on realease. Failing that if you can stretch a bit further the Sigma 17-70 is a cracker of a lens for the money and the non OS version can be picked up for not very much second hand.

Agree with you there.. I use a 30mm prime >80% of the time on my 40D.. but the 50mm is a good starting point. Certainly as someone's second lens if not their first. And without knowing what the OP wants to take photos of, it's very difficult to give more than generalisations.

I tend to always go back to my 17-85 IS, on my 40d it seems to give good results and offers a handy range for a walk about, its going to be more money than an 18-55 IS but I felt it was worth it.
I've got the 50mm f1.8 which does punch above its weight, but can be quite restrictive unless you like can back off subjects sometimes.

The 18-55 IS is the best "budget" zoom choice, and a great starter lens that shouldn't leave you wanting in quality terms as you get better. My partner and a colleague at work both have this lens and I've seen nice results from both.

The 50mm F1.8 is a very sharp lens for not much money. However, on a crop body it is 80mm FOV equivalent, the classic short portrait length. However, the 50 F1.8 has quite poor bokeh and so isn't hugely suited to portraiture. In general, I personally didn't find it a hugely useful lens on crop-factor.
