Ok partner is thinking buying some filters for me for my b'day :D, been looking at the hitech's from www.teamworkphoto.co.uk, just wondered would i be better buying the 85mm/100mm filters? Will be using on a siggy 10-20mm

Thanks Andy;)

I might be misunderstanding; but surely you need to get filters that match the diameter of the lens? In your case 77mm.

I just got a couple of them last week. Got the 85mm for on the 10-20 and I'm using them in a kood holder. I will have to get a wide angle holder or trim down the one I have as it can be seen at around the 12 mm mark.

Ah, then please do accept my apologies; I will be of further help, then, as I know nothing about those... :)

I believe the 85mm ones are for the Cokin P holder and the 100mm ones are for the X-Pro. So it depends on what holder you have, although you probably won't be able to shoot wider than 14mm with a regular Cokin P holder on the end of a Sigma 10-20 if the 40D is a crop body (I'm assuming it is).

There's a Cokin P wide filter holder that should let you go all the way out to 10mm on a crop body.

Or, just get the Cokin X-Pro. It's a bit more expensive, but should work with all focal lengths on crop or full frame bodies.

You'll need 100mm filters. I'm using 100mm on my Tokina 11-16mm with the Cokin Z-Pro (wide angle) adaptor and, if I take off the front-most slot (leaving 2), I get no vignetting at all at any aperture. If I leave it on I can just about see it at 11mm.

If I were using 85mm with the P adaptor I would expect vignetting problems.

The physical size of the 100mm filters is 100x125mm (125mm high). This gives you a decent amount of room to play with when positioning grads on a 77mm lens.

The 85mm filters are only 110mm high which is all the more restrictive.

FYI - The X-Pro is even bigger than the Z-Pro - it takes 170mm x 130mm filters, specifically for SWA lenses on full frame I believe.

Also... :D

If you ring up www.formatt.co.uk (the makers of the HiTech filters I think), they can do a Special N.D grad kit which allows you to mix and match any 3 soft/hard grads from 0.3-1.2 (1 to 4 stops), all for £75

The deal is also on the website but it doesn't make it clear that you can mix soft and hard as well as density in the 3 choices you get.
