Yes
So, living in England, the weather is pretty poor most of the time!

What can I do with the camera indoors that still gets great shots and helps me learn the basics??

Thanks

My kit is very basic as I have only just started out!

I've got a Nikon D5000 with the 18-55 kit lens and a Tamron 70-300 lens!

make a lightbox from a box and white paper http://SPAM/c4gb2j5 or you could buy a Maplin portable studio £15 http://SPAM/cz8by9e

is the tamron macro as well

get an interesting object put on the table set the camera up you might need some books etc. to raise the camera focus on the object (manually) set the camera to (bulb) make the room dark and after opening the shutter use a torch to light the subject moving the torch around but don't point it at the camera.

Nice idea, bit adventurous for a new user, best get an idea of the cam and settings first, but yes give it a go its fun, use ISO 100, F11,

Do you have a cable release?

Yes the Tamron is macro and I also have a shutter release cable!!

I'm liking the ideas!!

I have played about drawing shapes and writing with a bit of light painting but haven't managed to do anything very interesting yet!!

So....here are the fruits of last nights labour!!

I dont think it looks too bad!!

No it looks good your right, nice n sharp with narrow DoF, it catches the moment nicely. ..looks like you have the basics nailed in this one.

Next is to add in layers to make it wondrous. stuff like...
1. A suitable pretty background.
2. Cool coloured water and reflections. (because of the background maybe)
3. Framing, angle, spacing.
4. Glass type, liquid type.
5. lighting is everything. low high, dim and spot, shadow, no shadow...just so as it all looks fab when framed.

Have a look at the tabletop work done by SteveBlackDog, he describes his set-ups and uses very basic and frequently homemade kit.

It's all about using your imagination*.. ..

* If you're under 30 years of age you're exempt from having to use your imagination as it's generally accepted that this is the first part of the brain targetted by Sony/Nintendo use.
