Sorry if this has been repeated 1000 times but I'm now looking for a really nice easy to use wideangle lens, I'm going to Asia and Australia next year so can't take a tripod but need a really good 2nd hand wide angle lens, I already have a Tamron 11-18 I think, but it seems very slow to focus and not very wide, I also have a samyang fisheye but it's manual and a fisheye so am I being stupid and just take those 2 or would a Sigma 10-20 or something else be much better?

I really don't mind spending the money if the lens is going to last so no wide angle filters, I will also be taking my Tamron 18-210 and really debating about my macro lens which I love using but space and weight etc.

Any advice would be fantastic :help:

I had a Sigma 10-20 on my 40D and really liked it.

It's a shame you said that the Tamron 11-18 wasn't wide enough as I'd have suggested the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 which is a fanastic lens, I've used it a lot in low light and have had no issues with focussing speed, it's extremely sharp too.

As far as I'm aware the only lens wider than 10mm for a crop sensor is the Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6.

You seem a bit unsure what Tamron you have in your OP... Strange question, but is it definately the 11-18?? This should be plenty wide enough, only the Sigma 10-20 and Canon 10-22 are wider (by 1mm!), you really shouldnt need to go wider than that unless you want a fisheye effect (ie the 8mm Siggy).

Yup it is the 11-18, but it just seems to take ages to focus, is the Sigma or Tokina better quality?

Sigmas have historically been a wee bit hit or miss with regard to softness and picture quality but more recent ones are good. Try before you buy would help.
Alternatvely the Canon 10-22 is a V good lens but a good bit dearer than the Sigma. Depends on your budget. I have the Sigma and I'm very happy with it.

There isn't anything better than the canon 10-22. It's razor sharp, has wonderful definition, hardly any distortion and has USM. I loved mine on a crop.

I disagree. Ive had the 10-22mm for about 6 months and although I was very impressed with it I do prefer the Tokina 11-16mm in terms of sharpness.

11-18 not wide enough? other then the siggy and canon, by all of 1mm, you wont get wider! Cant speak for the focus speed either, but i can vouch for the Sigma.

I borrowed one from a friend when i went on honeymoon and it was very impressive. I would buy second hand from someone here to get a sharp copy as if you are going away soon, the last thing you want is to buy one and then have to send it away, or not notice and get poorly focused pics

I am willing to say it could be me not using it correctly but it does seem to hunt before focusing, so something fast would be better.

I've the Sigma 10-20mm and am pleased with it. I beleive te Canon 10-22mm is supposed to be slightly better, but for the limited use mine gets, I couldn't justify the extra expense.

Not sure how fast it focuses compared to yours - do you know anyone who has a different UWA lens to compare ??
