What would you choose?

Yes
…having a very limited budget, would you rather go for basic DSLR with a decent lens or a higher level DSLR with a kit lens?

Kind of examples I have in mind:
Sony a100/200 + Sigma 17-70 vs Canon 350d/400d/20d + 18-55 kit lens?

And I am talking here about budget of max £250 (second-hand camera).

Thanks a lot.

Dont know abot the Sony, but I have a 20D and its a great camera, much better than a 350D, Kit lens isent bad, but you might be able to pick up a decent body on here, and get a better lens, again from the For Sale section.

Dave.

the market seems to be awash with 400D's right now, loads of them on ebay.
I wouldn't go for 350D or 20D but would 400D or 30D.

Not enough info...Depends on what your photographing mostly..

eg: if your doing low light stuff then better body as it will have better iso capabilities...

I am doing mostly landscapes/urban landscapes, also in low light conditions but that what I use tripod for. i am getting excited about street photography but wouldnt require anything above 400-800 ISO. I am more about colours and sharpnes.

I guess it also depends what you want to do in the future re: upgrades.

If you are planning to have some cash to spend in the future, I would prefer to go for a slightly better camera now (400d is good; I have one & like it) and then updgrade glass over time. I have rented lenses like the 135mm f2 and others that are supposed to be among the top lenses optically and the 400d felt fine with them. (the 300mm f4 and 1.4 converter was too much weight though!).

When you've got enough glass, then upgrade your body.

That's just my 2p though; I would say either way you will be happy.

something not yet mentioned, is what are you doing with the pictures, If you want to make six foot wide glossy prints or if they are just keep sakes that will sit on your hard drive or website.
