hi guys
Need your advice on lens ....
At the moment I've got a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 hsm II DG which is a good lens ..
Plus also I've got jessops 2x extender
Which gives me 140 -400mm at f5.6.
Now should I stick with the above setup or should I get ..
Canon 100 - 400mm EF L F4 -5.6 ?
or
Canon 70 - 200mm EF L F2.8 & the canon 2x extender
or
something else lol
I Photo motorbikes BSB mainly & loads of track days on Cadwell ....

Personally I would say the 100-400mm mite be your best bet, Giving you good reach and you don't have to lose quality in a 2x converter to get the reach, A Canon 300mm f/4 or 400mm f/5.6 mite be worth a look at aswell...

I borrowed a 100-400L IS and it absolutley blew me away.. Id never used such a pro lens before and I borrowed it for an airshow.

The shots I got were so sharp, even at full reach, even considering it was an old, dusty lens.. the is worked excellently, again at full reach, even the fastest planes at low level were easy to keep in shot.

Could you maybe go to a local shop and borrow/rent a sigma extender for an event you attend, to see how that setup could work for you..?

got a jessops 2x extender

got a jessops 2x extender

Ahh, I should read more thoroughly..!

How does it work for you, ever used it at an event..?

(I re-read) are you after the 2.8 IS at all, I would probably aim for that if you're using an extender..

If the extender is working for you at the moment non OS, maybe stay that way and go for the 70-200, if you use 70mm alot.., if not, 100-400 IS everytime..

would you go with canon or sigma ?
Big price difference !!
Never used the EF L range & don't know if there's a big difference in picture quality ?
Never used my sigma with the jessops extender at a event yet ,just got the extender free of a m8 ...

If I had the money Canon, but reading reviews and penny watching, Sigma..

Maybe try a few shots at a normally attended event using the extender, quality wont be what youd get maybe using canon stuff but see how it is, that'll give you an indication if that range will work for you.. Newer Sigma stuff is outperforming Canon at the moment, pound for pound, if you buy new that is..

Do you think you'd miss 70mm an awful lot..? Would a two lens setup be out of the question..?

Sigma EX 120-400 mm F/4.5-5.6 HSM OS DG Lens on ebay around £365 -£400 !!!
Canon 100 - 400 mm EF L around £650 upwards ....
Is there that much difference in quality ? And picture quality ?
Ahhh lol

I use a Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII and a Canon 2x MkIII converter to give me a 140-400 f5.6. I usually use that setup on my 70D while I have a Sigma 150-500 OS on my 5D3. The 70-200 and 2x combo gives me a great IQ without losing too much AF speed and TBH the output seems to rival the 100-400 L I used to have. I have just got a 300 f4L IS and have used that with a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x converter and that gives me a very good IQ too. Here's a shot from the 70-200 and 2x combo that I got last summer, it was stopped down to f8 and was taken with my 70D. There's no PP apart from a crop IIRC but there might have been a slight levels increase to bring out the shadows a bit if anything but that's it. I honestly can't remember getting many shots better than that with the 100-400 but I sold mine before I got my 5D3 and I'd like a chance to try one out on it.

Would you be able to keep the sigma 70-200 and have the sigma 120-400..? (If you're buying used..)

My only thought would be whether using a 70-200 plus extender would be ok for motorsport non is/os..?

Don't

Don't you rate the sigma setup then would you say stay with the ef l range at the higher price

My Sigma 150-500 OS works excellently with my 5D3, it's my most used zoom overall and I've got loads of great photos from it and I've no intention of getting rid of it. But for some reason, it doesn't work too great with my 70D. Even focussing using live view just doesn't seem as crisp with the 70D as the Canon lenses and although I can get some really good shots with it on the 70D it's just not reliable enough for me. I'll either use the 300mm on its own or with a converter or the 70-200 with a converter on the 70D rather than the Sigma and just keep the Sigma specifically for the 5D3.

Just as a comparison, this was taken on the 5D3 with the Sigma 150-500 OS, again taken at f8 and no PP apart from a crop. If you get a good one it's worth hanging on to it.

Ive got a backup camera 450D & my new camera a 7D would that make a difference in which lens setup at all ?

I only use this lens on a monopod so I'm hoping it will be ok ?

Possibly so, I was thinking more of panning..

To be honest, I saw mortorsport and just ran away with that image.. do you use this setup for any other work..?
