Yes
I think I can get myself a new lens this christmas but which one.

I have a 400D with a Sigma 17-70mm and a sigma 70-300 APO and maybe around £300ish

Im unsure what to upgrade or get.

I was thinking either a better walkabout lens or a longer lens
My 70-300 sigma is pretty poor at the 300 end and I was wondering about something with IS.
The 17-70 isnt bad but sometimes I feels its not sharp enough plus it also doesnt have IS

Next step up for a walkaround would probably be Sigma 18-50mm or 24-70mm (£280 or so), or Canon 24-105mm IS or 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, but you're up to £500 and more for a second hand one of either of those. I've found 24mm to be slightly too long on a crop body, although YMMV.

With £300ish i'd keep it and save up.

Whatever you buy i doubt you'll not notice that much difference, just keep that 17-70 between f5.6-F11

Over 300mm and under £300 is not going to happen unfortunately except if you invest in a 1.4x or 2x tc and use it with your 70-300

interesting as i find my 17-70 quite sharp and apart from it getting slow as you zoom out, i really cant find enough cause to upgrade mine just yet!

Hi,

nothing wrong with the 17-70 I had either yours might be need a wee checkup at Sigma :(

Mike.

The 17-70 is a great lens. And serious, IS on a lens like this is not needed IMO.

However, maybe if you want to sell it and get 2 lenses. The siggy 10-20 and the 24-70f2.8 to give you a really versatile kit.

10-20 - Extreme Wide Angle
24-70 f2.8 - Great low light and walk about lens (Although probably not wide enough for lanscapes for walkabout)
70-300 - Long voom.

Id look at investing in a nice 70-200 f2.8 next and then maybe a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and you will have a great collection of low light lenses

Also, maybe consider a Nifty Fifty as they are peanuts!

:agree: get some nice fast f2.8 glass and a f1.4 fifty (y)

a good questions already asked is....what do you shoot???
the 70-300 IS canon is great for the money I think. IS is handy at long range.
I'd save for some nice qualidy glass or go very wide maybe.
there is a nice 28-135 IS canon lens. but it's not wide enough for me on a cropped sensor.
you could get a tripod, nifty 50 and a teleconverter for the 70-300 if that's your poison
longer than 300 for less than 300 is difficult I think
