What's a good external hard drive

I've got a fairly good laptop with 500GB SSD for the system and 1TB for the picture. But the 1TB is getting pretty full now. I like to keep it all in the same place instead of having stuff hidden in a drawer which i don't remember about.

My option is to either get a 2TB SSD to replace the internal 1TB.
Or maybe get an external that sit on the desk. I've never had an external that sit on the desk. What is good nowadays? Is USB 3.0 still the best or should i go for wifi or anything else I don't know about yet?
I was thinking if i go for 4TB that will give me some margin!
 
I have an 8TB Western Digital MYBook with USB 3 point whatever they are upto these days.

I rate it 10 / 10, it is much faster than external drives were in the past and huge capacity.
