What's the best way/scanner to copy a physical print?

I've done this via scanner at Jessops before and worked out OK, but is there a better option and one which can be found on high street?

If it was for home use, then which scanner?

Also if I have a high res printed print at 7x5 and scan it at the likes of jessops, how big do you think I could go?

These are of portraits/people.

I have had a flat bed Epson scanner for 5 - 6 years now, which I bought purely for scanning photos - not printing/faxing/dispensing cans of Coke !

It scans up to 1200 dpi which is far more than I have ever actually used, as you end up with the most massive files imaginable at that resolution.
Doing it yourself allows you to try several different resolutions to see which best suits the print you are dealing with.
Much of the stuff I have done has been old family "snaps" and generally I have been very pleased with the quality of the scans I have obtained, even from fairly small postcard sized prints.
I mainly view them in Photoshop Elements on a 22" monitor, even on "full screen" they are of a most acceptable quality.

can i pick one up cheap?
