Whats the Nikon equivalent of Canon 500D?

I currently own a Nikon D40 but might be getting the Canon EOS 500D (present!!!) can anyone tell me what the Nikon equivalent to the Canon 500D would be please.
 
D5000? Although that is pretty much a D90, which is technically a higher spec.

They don't really have one because it is superior to the D60, but not quite D90 level.
 
i dont know what the equivalent would be but all the tog magazines at the moment are comparing it with the new nikon d5000

Or also the D90. When I priced up cheapest deals on d5000 with 18-105mm lens, and the d90 with same (kit) lens there was very little difference (30 UKP). That was a few weeks ago. Since then the lowest price on d90 appears to have risen a little, and d5000 dropped so differential may be greater.

d90 adds wireless flash, lcd top panel display,larger/brighter viewfinder, more controls, larger lcd, (and 100g or so) but looses articulating lcd & extra scene modes. Honestly both look great.
