Which battery grip for the Nikon d700? (and which cf card reader?)

hi all, got my d700 coming next week. Have bought some flash cards etc but i'm kind of stumped on which grip to get. Ebay throws up a lot of options at around the £40 mark. I got a third party one on my d90 which is fine, so i don't mind going down the third part route, but i'm unsure of which one to plump for.

Or should i REALLY get the official one?

and while i've got your attention ;) - can someone recommend a fast and sturdy cf card reader? thanks.
 
The MB-D10 is made of the same magnesium alloy as the D700, the copies are made of plastic. It's up to you which you prefer....

but for ~£200 quid...it seems a lot despite the obvious better build quality. I'd rather put that money towards a better lens etc..
 
Both my D700 bodies have the official grip, less than £300 for the pair second hand from here and worth every penny. I don't really understand why people spend so much on a body only to put cheap accessories on it.
 
yeah, i know what you mean. i've just realised that the d700 uses the same batteries as my d90 (right?), so that's saved me £40 odd...i think i'll probably get an official one. How much should i be looking to spend then?
 
If you make sure you buy the Meike branded one you will find it has a mag alloy base and 2 strengthening mag alloy strips on each side which makes it a good strong grip at a fifth of the price, forget all the other non branded grips, they are cheap as hell, Meike aren't

I use one on my D700 and it performs perfectly and you get all the required accessories like the 2 battery trays and the BL-3 end cover to allow the attachment of the D3 batteries for the 8 fps shooting, you have to buy these separately with the Nikon grip

that's the brand i've had on my d90 for the last few months and i have to say the quality seems top notch.

Around £130-£150 second hand seems to be the current price, there's always some for sale in the classifieds.
 
Another Meike user here. Ive had genuine grips before, and TBH, I probably wont again. No point, the Meike one is fine, and not really far off the genuine one quality wise.

I think I paid about £40 for it and that came with a BL-3, and all the plates for AA or EN-EL3 batteries.
Nikon want about £30 just for the BL-3, which is a complete rip off.
 
Sorry to hog your post, but does anyone know where The Meike version for the D90 can be obtained from other than by post please?
 
I got a Meike grip - something like 60 quid, with two batteries, and delivery from China - arrived in about a week or so. As a battery grip its absolutly fine, but the little joystick was a mistake in retrospect as its pretty useless - I'd go for a gamepad type control (like on the D700) instead if I did it again. Ditto the LCD with an interval timer function, don't really need that, as now found you can directly from from the camera anyway...

But as all I wanted was the extra battery capacity and larger size for balance with longer lenses, its fine (the 70-200 VRII is very unwieldy to hand-hold without a grip). I'd replace it with a proper Nikon one if you could get one for a sensible price, but you can't... If you want one mouted all the time, the D3/D3S is a better solution anyway...
 
Just got a Meike grip myself. Very pleased with it for the money spent. I only intended it for occasional use, for portrait shots, and to get the FPS. Otherwise, funds permitting, I'd go for a D3.

There is another Meike grip without the LCD and has the normal D700 control joypad thing. I think you may have chosen the wrong one.
