Originally was thinking D7000 but then also started looking towards D3s and full frame bodies.

Would need a body, 50 mm prime lens, poss 70-200mm, 21-35mm, wide angle ??

I would like a failry comprehensive kit bag

Ideas and suggestions welcomes.

If your budget is £2500, then you're not going to get a D3s, even secondhand, never mind decent lenses to go with it. If you're doing motorsport you'll need at least a 70-200 f/2.8 and probably a 300 f/2.8, so even secondhand for a D3s and Nikon glass I doubt you'd see any change out of £5-6000.

By the sound of it you'd be better with a D300s a 70-200 VR I and a 50mm f/1.4, if you buy secondhand you should still £2500 budget have enough change for something like a 300mm f/4 or a coupe of other decent primes.

Skip the D3 range - outside your price range.

Do you want to be full frame or not? Probably is the answer for Portrait, probably not for motorsport with your selection of listed lenses.

You *may* get a secondhand D700, 70-200 Vr mk1 and 50mm for £2500, but its pushng it.

What about flash guns etc?

D700 approx £1300 s/h
70-200 approx £850 s/h
50mm 1.8 £100 s/h
20-25 F2.8 £350 sh
Sb900 £250 sh

There are other makes, but I've quoted all Nikon.

Why not take a look at the kit that the serious motorsport guys are using on here ..(TP).....I think you will see that the D3S is not anywhere to be seen. I agree on the full frame for portrait work but saying that...if you are not enlarging above 20x16 I wouldn't think it overly important.

I shoot Canon but there isn't really much in the two...
 
Thanks for the advice. In reality I will probably end up doing more portrait work than motorsport but would still like the flexibility to do both. I do realise £2500 isnt that much for a full bag of decent kit but if I can get a good base and build from there I will be happy.

From what you said in the opening your only going to make money from the start in portrait work so look at the studio lights your going to need as well. The sun does not always shine in this country.
