Hi Everyone, i am now wanting to buy my very 1st DSLR and im unsure of what to get!. and was wondering if anyone can give me some information on body and lenses.. I am new and looking to learn more, i have been reading lots of information about it all and i am now looking to buy to put it into practice..hopefully. I am torn between Nikon and Canon! but which models? I want one that i am going to be happy with for many years to come ( cant afford to keep updating) and to practice on and once fully aware and comfortable in what im doing then i would also like it to have enough in it to satisfy me once i am over the basics! i am looking to do mainly portraits, motorsport and just "general" photos, so unsure of what lenses for an "all round" photo, also Macro but im assuming a nice macro lens for that one lol. I hope all this makes sense :bang: im useless at explaining myself haha. i am looking for as cheap as poss and no more than £700. Many thanks in advance. Beck

Ooook.... Nikon vs Canon seems where a lot of people end up! And almost everyone has a preferance. The ultimate thing seems to be though, there's no actual difference in final images, you only way to pick is to hold each you're looking at and find out which menu layout etc you prefer.

As is so often said here though, the lenses are the main factor into your cost, they matter more. For motorsports you'll need really a minimum of a 300mm lens, a decent one second hand I think will be around £200 (this is starting decent, not pro decent mind!), similar really for a macro. Any sort of the kit lenses like the 18-70 will cover your general stuff and portraits, used let's say £150?

Most cameras will come with a good general one, the Nikon D5000 comes with the 18-55mm lens usually and comes in around £400 or so new, which would leave enough to get others. That lens again should do your general photography, at least for a while. I'm only going on Nikons as I don't know all the Canon ranges.

The other option is a 2nd hand body, which will allow more of your budget to get decent lenses.

It's a minefield really! Nobody can - or anyway should - tell you what you should get as it's personal opinion. Some people would rather spend more on the body to begin with and put up with the kit lens until they can get better ones.

I'll let someone else help confuse you now :D

also look at other options from sony, olympus and pentax. its all down to preference, you cant tell what the final image was taken on unless you was a major pixel peeper who's had years off experience.

Go to a camera shop and pick a few up, the different brands are very different to hold. You spend alot of time with it in your hand.

I'm more inclined for a Nikon, so as mentioned i may just go in Jessops tomorrow and have a nose around and hold a few and see. been eager to get one for the past yr or so but been waiting and reading and learning and now i thought it time to buy one and start putting what i "know" into practice!. Always seems to go in one ear and out the other but hopefully once i have something "in front of me" i will pick it up and remember it all. Thankyou for your advice. x

Ok, i bit the bullet and went into jessops for a nose and i have now bought a D5000 + basic kit lens, get practicing now i suppose! Thanks again

Very good choice there! Enjoy getting confused with all the buttons!!!:D

If you need any help just ask the Nikon lot on here. They are nearly as helpfull as the Canon lot!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Lol, thanks!. think i got some "bed time reading" ahead of me!.. Will defo be spending more time on here now!.. i expect there will be plenty of Q's comin from me :) Managed to find the "understanding photography" link so i expect my time will be spent there for a while whilst practicing etc. Thankyou all for you advice and future help :D
