Hello everybody, I would like to purchase a new lens to upgrade from my current 18-55mm non IS and i have a few options in mind so here they are:

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS & Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II

or...

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

or...

Canon EF - Zoom lens - 28 mm - 135 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I don't mind if anybody wants to share any other lens or deals that would be better.
Thanks in advance:)

Are you intending buying new or used?

These are the type of lenses that can be picked up cheap used in really good nick.

Well i was going to buy new, but now you've mentioned it i may consider buying used if they are alot cheaper but still in good condition.

Hi

Without stating the obvious :D, what are you wanting the new lens to do

The 17-85 is a better lens than you 18-55 and gives you a bit more reach
The 55-250 is a belter of a lens, fits nicely with your 18-55 range
The 28-135 is a great lens - I was very happy with mine and kind of a good general walk about lens range - not as wide as the 18-55 (or 17-85) or as long as the 55-250, but gives you the mid range covered (of the 18 to 250 range) well in a nice lens.

I suppose you need to look at what length are you using the most now, if you 28mm + and wanting a bit extra reach, the 28-135 is the one to go for, if your wanting a lot more reach, then the 55-250, if you are using the full range of your lens regularly and the bit extra reach would be a help, then the 17-85.

As I said, it's a real "what do you want the lens to do" case

Hope this is of some help,

Hi Baillie

You don't say what your budget or aim is. If you want to upgrade your 18-55mm, then the 55-250mm won't do the job as it is a very different lens. Look to the 17-85mm or the new 15-85mm which is much better in build quality and performance. You should also consider the Sigma 17-70mm or the several 17/18-50mm lenses from Sigma and Tamron. If you buy a non Canon lens you may have enough left over the get the 55-250mm as well and then you have many bases covered in two lenses.

To be honest i don't really shoot a certain subject as i am new(ish) to photography so i have not yet decided sometimes i may require more zoom and other times i shoot more macro so as the 55-250mm is cheaper i decided i woud include a 50mm aswell for my macro needs if i go with that option.

Sorry, i didn't really mean upgrade so sorry for giving you the wrong idea as i will still be using my 18-55mm if needs be, and my budget is around £220 i would prefer to buy from either Amazon (because i get VAT off as i live in the channel islands) or a refurb from the canon store on ebay.

Thanks.

You do not say why you want to "upgrade" the 18-55mm non-IS lens. If you are happy with the range of the lens and the overall feel of the package, then one obvious choice would be the IS version of the lens you have for around £75. That would then sit well with the 55-250mm IS lens for the telephoto range.

If you prefer a single walkaround lens with more reach than you currently have, then the 17-85mm IS lens is good but not significantly better than the 18-55mm IS in my opinion.

For macro, the 18-55mm focuses far closer than the 55-250mm IS lens and can provide good closeup work. If you need more, then a 12mm extension tube will be a cheap way forward.

The 18-55mm doesn't really have enough reach for some of the shots i take and in my opinion it doesn't do a great job up close either.
