Which Canon lens

I'm looking at options for a general walkabout lens for my 40d.

Currently I only have a 50mm prime lens for it, so am interested in adding a zoom to it.

I'm thinking of either the Tamron 17-50, the Sigma 18-50, maybe even the 17-70 (if I can find one cheap enough), or even the Canon 17-85mm.

Any recommendations or thoughts as to what I should be looking at?

Budget is around the £300 mark, and it is for allsorts of photography.

Tamron 17-50 non-VC is probably the best option. It's cheap, sharp, well built and well regarded. The only downside is the noisy AF - but it's quite fast and accurate.

The Canon 17-85 doesn't have the best reputation - I think it's not as sharp, slower to focus etc. I think the other two are well rated, but not as highly as the Tammy. That's my understanding at least, and what drove me to buying a Tammy last week!

Thanks for your reply, I'm drawn to the Tamrom but I'd really like VC. and been advised its not as good a lens as the non VC version!
