Which DSLR is ideal for a rookie?

I want to get this D40 i found for exchange and i was wondering if its the right choice for me to get into photography? Does it matter the model is old?
 
The right choice for you is the one you like best not necessarily the one we use.

You need if possible to go and try the bodies to see whether it feels right in your hands. Difficult with older bodies though.

The D40 is an older Nikon consumer entry level DSLR. Now that does not make it a bad choice, however it is quite small and if you have large hands that may be an issue. The sensor is 6MP so will produce nice prints at up to A3 in size. It does not have the high iso range of more modern cameras but unless you are shooting in low light that won't be an issue.

It has no in body motor so only lenses with the AF-S designation for Nikon, HSM for sigma will autofocus. There are however plenty of low cost AF-S lenses available.

That camera is in the USA are you?

the truth is that i am short in cash at the moment and i am intrigued by the idea of exchanging something to get this camera!
Luckily i ve got a cousin livin near by, so location wont be a problem!
 
I would say buy what you can afford. Get the basics to start with. Learn with what you get and then once you get a bit more savvy, then you can start exploring lenses or new bodies.

I would go with a slightly newer camera like canon 1100d, good price at the moment, it may be a little harder to get lenses for the older models, my local cash converter had a canon 500d with a std lens for £350, not to bad. Happy hunting
