I mostly shoot portraits looking to upgrade from my d60

The D90 has a lot more to offer than the D5000 in terms of usability - top LCD, less fiddling in menus to make changes, built in motor for lenses which need this.

Image quality is much the same I believe.

For portraits, either will do a good job - more important is the lenses you will use.

A strange turn of phrase

It means that you are not restricted to AF-S lenses, any Nikkor AF lens will work on it

That alone would make me go for the D90 over the D5100
