which is better? Sony Alpha A390 or Canon EOS 1100D

hi guys, i'm looking at buying my first DSLR and have researched up cameras within my tiny price range of under £400 or slightly over (as i can borrow about £100) and the 2 that i have found that i like the look of are the Sony Alpha A390 and the Canon EOS 1100D.
I like the look of the Sony one more as it is more suited to what i am looking for but i don't know a) if Sony camera's are reliable and b) if it is better than the Canon??? :thinking:

is there anyone that can help me?

2nd cameras have to fell right in your hand somight be worth going and try a few to see what you like, there are some nice cmas for about the £400 mark, sony have a few offering as do canon and nikon and pentax and olympus, each have there own advantages, canon and nikon have lots of bodys and have the biggest range of lenses, but you need lenses with vr,os,is,vc to have stablilisation.
sony have built in super steady shoot which can be handy, also the new range use dslt tecnolgy,
pentax are very well built and have shake reduction in the body and probably the best weather sealing on the market. but do have limited lenses.
olypus alos have built in image stabilisation in there bodys, and do have some nice glass, but have a smaller sensor size.

its alot to think about but what will you be shooting and what lenses do you think you will need, do you think you will need a seprate flash, you have to look for the future and buying the sony to think afterwards that you should of brought another brand because of a lens you wont.

Yes Sony bodies are as reliable as any of the others, so don't think you'll have worries that way.

Is it better than the canon? Very much down to personal choice, you say it meets your needs better than the canon - then for you it is better.

The golden rule is to go and hold them and see which feels nicer in your hand, which ones buttons / layout feels the most intuitive to use and which you feel most comfortable with.

I think there is a wider choice of lenses available for the canon range and a wider price range as well, but there are still plenty of Sony or Minolta lenses for you to look at.

A couple of minor differentiators - The Sony is slightly heavier, which might make a difference, and the Sony has a built-in HDR capability, which I find quite intriguing and is something that I've been thinking should nowadays be part of a standard build so that's a step forward. On a negative point - The Sony still ships with a lot of onboard noise reduction - marketed as a plus by Sony but seen by me as a negative as it's an admission that the sensor is still noisy at higher ISOs. Something that would cause me to avoid it but I appreciate that views differ on this. They both appear to be highly capable cameras.

I think Pentax kr wins both hands down . as for the future - I would then sell the pentax and get at least canon 60d with some nice lens.
 
You should go with whatever you feel suits you.

I did this when I first got into photography; here I am now with a full frame Sony camera and thousands of pounds worth of lenses in my bag and I get paid for my work.

There is no right or wrong choice. It is personal preference.

One thing to note though, the range of Sony lenses isn't as extensive as the Canon/Nikon choice. There's still plenty to choose from, but not as much as the other manufacturers.
 
i have a a290 (same as an a390 just without the tilting screen and some other small differences) and i love mine. This is my first DSLR also and im very happy with it. The lens range isn't massive compared to the others but that doesn't mean there isn't any. The lens range is more than big enough for people like us who are just starting out.
 
i have my camera at last! i went for the Canon Eos 1100D and i love it! i've had it a few weeks now (and have only just managed to get online) and it was definately the right choice. My photo's have improved alot and even though i havent quite got the hang of telling when the photo is in foucs, i am learning and getting to know my camera :) thanks for all the advice guys :) was much help :)

I've recently got my hands on the 1100d and am struggling with the same focus issue. Love it though:thumbs:

Build in HDR? My first camera was the A390, I never found that feature! :razz:
 
it's there but is a jpeg only feature (a box should pop up saying "not available" if you try in RAW).
Just proves that many people don't use/find all the features of their cameras.
